At the Yap Traditional Navigation Society (YTNS), we are dedicated to preserving and promoting the island’s rich maritime traditions, and we're thrilled to announce a new project made possible by the generous support of the Yap State Resource and Development Office. With their funding, we will be repairing and preparing one of our traditional sailing canoes in time for Yap Day 2025, a celebration that honors the unique cultural heritage of Yap and its people.

A Special Project for a Special Occasion
Yap Day, celebrated annually on March 1st, is a significant event for the people of Yap, marking the island’s deep cultural roots and connection to its traditions. This year, Yap Day will be even more meaningful as we honor the maritime heritage of the island with the restoration of one of our treasured traditional sailing canoes. The canoe, which has been an integral part of Yap’s maritime history, will undergo extensive repairs to ensure it is seaworthy and ready for the grand festivities in 2025.

With the funding provided by the Yap State Resource and Development Office, we are able to gather the necessary materials and skilled artisans needed for the canoe's repair. This is a special project that will not only prepare the canoe for its role in the Yap Day celebrations but also contribute to the revival of traditional sailing practices, which have been a part of Yap's identity for centuries.

Reviving Traditional Boat Building Skills
The repair of the canoe offers a valuable opportunity for our community, especially the youth, to reconnect with the island’s ancient boat-building techniques. Throughout the repair process, experienced boat builders and navigators will work alongside local youth to teach them how to restore the canoe using traditional materials and methods passed down through generations. This hands-on experience ensures that the craft of boat building and the knowledge of traditional navigation continue to thrive on Yap.

The restoration process is not just about fixing a canoe; it's about preserving the skills and wisdom of our ancestors. By involving the younger generation in this project, we are planting the seeds for a future where traditional maritime knowledge is passed on and cherished for generations to come.

A Symbol of Cultural Pride
Once the canoe is fully restored, it will be an important symbol of Yap’s cultural pride during Yap Day 2025. The canoe will be showcased in the celebrations, demonstrating the island’s deep connection to the sea and its people’s enduring maritime traditions. This repair project will bring the community together as we celebrate our heritage and showcase the significance of traditional sailing canoes in Yap’s identity.

We are deeply grateful to the Yap State Resource and Development Office for their generous support in making this project a reality. Their commitment to preserving Yap's cultural heritage through projects like this one is truly invaluable.

Looking Ahead
As Yap Day 2025 approaches, we are excited to share this important milestone with our community. The repaired canoe will be a testament to the hard work, dedication, and unity of the Yap Traditional Navigation Society, our volunteers, and partners who have worked tirelessly to bring this project to life.

Thank you again to the Yap State Resource and Development Office for their essential contribution. We can’t wait to celebrate Yap Day 2025 with the restored canoe proudly on display, ready to sail once more.
